Ingredients
  

For the Dough:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk (or non-dairy milk)
For the Decoration:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk (or non-dairy milk)
  • Food coloring (red or pink)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.

  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  7. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies from the dough.
  8. Place the heart cookies onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
  9. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk (or non-dairy milk) until smooth. Add food coloring, if desired, and mix well.

  11. Once the cookies are completely cool, decorate them with the icing and sprinkles, if desired.
