  • 1 pint fresh strawberries hulled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Gently mix sliced strawberries with granulated sugar and lemon juice in a bowl. Let them sit for a few minutes to release their juices.

  3. Unfold the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface.

  4. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out hearts from the puff pastry.

  5. Place half of the heart cutouts on the prepared baking sheet. Top each with a spoonful of the strawberry mixture.

  6. Place the remaining heart cutouts on top of the strawberry-filled hearts, creating a "sandwich."

  7. Gently press the edges of each heart to seal. You can also use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative look.
  8. Brush the top of each heart with the beaten egg. This will give them a beautiful golden shine.

  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and the pastry is puffed.
  10. Let the baked hearts cool on a wire rack. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, and serve immediately.
