Ingredients

For the Puppy Chow
  • 9 cups Rice Chex, Corn Chex, or Crispix cereal
  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup peanut butter (smooth or chunky)
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Coating
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candies (candy canes work great!)
  • festive Christmas sprinkles (optional)

Equipment

  • Large Bowl
  • Microwave-Safe Bowl
  • Large Zip-top Bag
  • Wax Paper or Parchment Paper

Method

  1. Pour cereal into a very large bowl.
  2. In a large microwave-safe bowl, melt butter, peanut butter, and chocolate chips together. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
  3. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Pour melted chocolate mixture over the cereal and gently mix until everything is coated evenly.
  5. Place powdered sugar and crushed peppermint candies into a large zip-top bag.
  6. Add the coated cereal to the bag, seal, and shake well until completely coated.
  7. Spread the puppy chow in a single layer on wax paper or parchment paper to cool and completely set.
  8. Sprinkle with festive Christmas sprinkles, if desired.

Notes

Use good quality chocolate for the best taste. Don't overcook the chocolate mixture in the microwave. Let the puppy chow cool completely before storing it. Store it in an airtight container to maintain its crispness. If you are making for a big crowd, you can double the ingredients.
