Ingredients
  

For the Cookies:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (2 sticks)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
For the Royal Icing:
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons meringue powder
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • gel food coloring (red, pink, etc.)

Method
 

  1. Cream: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  2. Add: Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

  3. Combine: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  4. Gradually Add: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. Chill: Divide the dough in half, flatten into disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  8. Cut: Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies.
